Unknown even to many of Frankurt's residents is a beautiful medieval village tucked away to the city's west. Until 1928, Höchst was a small castle town separate from Frankfurt. In the Middle Ages, the Prince-Archbishops of Mainz ruled the town and built a castle to collect tolls on the valuable trade routes heading toward Frankfurt.
Unlike Frankfurt, though, Höchst was barely touched by the Second World War, and today, it is one of the best-preserved historical villages in Germany. Both its renowned half-timbered old town and its 19th-century New town are almost entirely intact, allowing the visitor an immersive exploration of Germany's history from the Middle Ages to the early 20th century.
I have lived here in this town for almost ten years and would love to introduce Frankfurt's most underrated destination.
This tour will take you on a historical journey through Germany's history as seen in the architecture and cityscape of Höchst. Depending on your interest, I can focus more on visual history, the stories of the half-timbered houses, or the modern history of Höchst.
