Emsland
Westphalian Hinterlands

Emsland

Region Overview

This sparsely populated region was only really settled in the 19th century when steam engines allowed for draining the moorlands and marshes. What it lacks in castles, cities, and churches, it has beautiful landscapes of hedgerows, windmills, and ancient moors. The beauty of the Emsland is its rugged cultural landscape of farms, canals, and forests.

What to Lookout For

  • The cultural landscape of the moors and marshes and the innovations people used to live among them, e.g., many of which are on display in the Cloppenburg Museum
  • The Ems River Valley, with its meandering floodplain and beautiful scenery
  • The palace and gardens of Clemenswerth, the only significant work of landscape architecture in this part of Germany
