Balkan Highlands

The Shopluk region largely corresponds to the South Western corner of Bulgaria but extends to the Morava River in Serbia and the Osogovo Mountains of North Macedonia. Comprised mostly of rugged mountains and dense forests, the residents of Shopluk, the Shopi, primarily reside in the valleys of the Struma and Iskar Rivers. Today the term usually refers to the residents of Sofia and the surrounding Iskar Basin. Still, the historical region reflects the once diverse ethnic quilt that once made up the region at the beginning of the 20th century.
